In 2019, SCMTS put shovels in the dirt to build the Sawpit Trail reroute, a fresh mile of natural, rugged singletrack in Soquel Demonstration State Forest. The original Sawpit Trail had been closed for a number of years while active logging took place in the forest, but in 2019, the area was ready to be reopened for recreational access.
Thanks to generous support from SCMTS donors and volunteers, the trail was constructed in just five months! Altogether, SCMTS volunteers contributed over 1,400 hours of trail building time to make Sawpit a reality. SCMTS restored much of the top of the previous trail the same but added hand-cut benched trail, multiple wooden bridges (sourced from old growth redwood found right there in SDSF) and a technical, optional rock garden. With support from Santa Cruz Bicycles and CAL FIRE, we opened this trail in April of 2020.
The Sawpit Trail reroute is the perfect trail for experienced cyclists to test their skills and enjoy a fast, fun descent through the redwoods.
